【Yuma】Extraordinary Man【Crime and Punishment Song】

“What if it was I who killed them? What if it was me?!” 🪓🩸 Well! This book and author I became obsessed with wormed its way into my brain, then my art, and now my music. I actually made this instrumental like last July, and to be honest it’s been so long that now I think it’s not a true reflection of my current music skills… It took so long to release because I kept having technical problems with the mix/kept on and off not liking how it was sounding… I am more or less happy with it now, but I think it was getting to the point where I was becoming my own worst critic, and I just needed to conquer my fear of releasing imperfect art. Anyways what do you think of Yumaskolnikov both with his gender slider turned up to 0.525 and with me forcing him to both speak talkloid and sing Russian lines? (Thanks so much Vacym for double checking my translations and the pronunciations for them btw!!! They are probably far from perfect but he said they are more or less understandable. Also I know I made at least one mistake in the Cyrillic subtitles writing p instead of п because my stupid English brain but oh well) (Vacym used to transcribe sheet music for me and write Russian subtitles for my videos, remember? He’s awesome!) It was fun to bridge the gap between my Dostoevsky fixation and my vocal synth community ties. If you haven’t read Crime and Punishment, I seriously recommend it! It’s basically a piece of classic literature about a poor ex-university student named Raskolnikov (the depressed, wet-cat-looking guy featured in this PV) in 1860s St. Petersburg who axe-murders two women in the name of a theory he has; the “extraordinary man” theory, in which he believes most people are “ordinary men” who don’t have the right to commit crime and exist to preserve society. But others? The “extraordinary men” (such as Napoleon, as he famously cites)? They have the right to kill if it means progressing their extraordinary ideas. And little 23-year-old dirt poor Rodion Romanovich Raskolnikov somehow considers his frail, college dropout self to be extraordinary, so he goes and kills an old corrupt pawnbroker (and her sister who walks in accidentally) to prove it! But it turns out murder doesn’t feel so extraordinary when he actually does it!!! In fact he actually goes insane a little!!!! In trying to show how he is Napoleonic and extraordinary, he only proves how ordinary he is… Anyways I tried to convey that feeling of descending into insanity and finally finding redemption in this song. This music video in itself is meant to be a brief visual adaptation of the events of the novel, so hopefully the gist of the story is here, and if you want to know more about it I’d be hyped to explain more in the comments. :) The talkloid bits are also verbatim quotes from the Constance Garnet English translation.
