【Fukase English】phony / フォニイ 【Vocaloid cover】

This is the first time I've used the VOCALOID software and honestly, I'm really proud of the way it turned out. Since I haven't used the software at all before, I wanted to practice with a cover before I potentially make my own music with it 👀 So, this is a project where I experimented with the effects, tuning and workings of VOCALOID! I advice you not to read this part if you're not curious on how I made this, cause if you will read it it'll be so boring you might fall asleep. I also advice you to listen to the song before reading this. I've used UTAU a lot before and it surprised me how little you have to do to make a VOCALOID sound good. The software is very intuitive to use because of my experience with UTAU, I was able to use it right away without any tutorials. There is one thing I struggle with though, which is tuning. Instead of modifying the pitch while looking at the piano roll, you have a seperate tab for pitch bending, and it's one line. It's very hard to use when you're used to seeing the pitch rendered instantly! Perhaps I'm just using it wrong, if I am please let me know in the comments lol For the breaths I actually went through something very elaborate, which prooobably wasn't needed but at least it sounds good! I first recorded me singing the whole song, then deleted every part that is not a breath. Now I am left with an audio track that sounds like a monkey with asthma (no hate to asthmatic people, love you all). I put Fukase's breath files over my own breaths and removed mine, this way I hope his breaths are naturally placed! Enough about VOCALOID, onto the rest of the music making progress! Because I didn't use just one track but also had harmonies, breaths etc. added, I had to mix the track too. I'm extremely inexperienced with mixing lol so I hope it turned out well! Fun fact, there's actually a small part where I sing- with small I mean like, two seconds. I will regret that later, I just hope you all won't catch it. For the illustration, I wanted it to be as close to the original as possible. I traced the mask and sketched some basic shapes over the original image for limb placement etc, then tried to replicate the art style used for the mask for the rest of the drawing. It took me so long, at least it turned out well! A few parts of the song that I want to comment on: At 0:49 I'm aware that I accidentally put "of" instead of "in"- I'm sorry! At 0:50 and all the other parapapapas I used Fukase's Normal/Soft voicebank, which is indeed a Japanese voicebank. I've tried to do it with his English voicebank but it just sounded super weird. I hope the switch from English to Japanese to English isn't too noticable lol. At 1:06 and the other parts I added an "Oh", I just think it sounds more natural and it also prevents the "be" from becoming painful to listen to! 1:11 MIIII 1:41 I made the "within" pitch bend up halfway through the note and I really like how it sounds for some reason! 1:54 Lagtrain reference? /j 2:06 to 2:15, I tried to make it not hurt your ears but I'm not sure if I succeeded... I'm sorry. At 2:21 I did some funky effects in Audacity, I copied "pain" and "rain" to a seperate track, used the "Paulstretch" effect for a few seconds and then between every beat I made that track fade out in an attempt to replicate the original song. I spent too long on that. 2:39 is not only my first growl with VOCALOID, but my first growl ever- I am so incredibly proud. I will think of that growl in my final moments. At 3:03, the final line of the song, I sang the line and used VocaListener to bring that emotion over to Fukase. I especially like the "-ny", it sounds so real and is in my opinion a great way to end the song. Oh lord. I didn't mean to make this long of a description (I hit the character limit... oops) I've just put so much time and effort into making this cover that I have a lot to say about it. There's probably even stuff I forgot to add.
