I didn't decide what I wanted to do for my 20th birthday until last week when I thought, why not just make a cover of a song I love? The year has been long. Unlike anything else. This was the year of many endings and many beginnings. I could pick out any single week since 2026 begun and look at the me that existed then and she would be like a different person. As for this song, it is deeply meaningful to me and that's why I chose it. Within the song is a painful longing for reality that echoed what I felt in my heart. When I was younger, I had a very... on-and-off relationship with reality, let's say. I spent a lot of time detached from my surroundings and in my own head, but also simultaneously my thoughts were swallowed up by everything going on around me. The world used to be something distance and unreachable. I looked at graffiti on the back of signs lining the freeway or faded street signs that were bent out of shape by strong winds during some storm and felt my chest tighten and my breath get caught in my throat from the beauty of their transience and the humanity that still lingered within them after all those years. In that vastness, I felt so very alone. This song put all those thoughts and feelings that seemed impossible to describe into words. I have wanted to cover Rain and Petra for a very long time, ever since I was in middle school at least. I'm happy I finally got to do so and on a major milestone in my life that does justice to how special this song is to me.
