Roblox was created by founder and CEO David Baszucki. The development of Roblox began in 2003 and was originally modeled after the real-time strategy game "Rise of Nations". However, it is now mainly inspired by Lego building blocks. Roblox was officially launched on March 28, 2006. Baszucki, who previously worked for the Israeli start-up company Terminus, had the idea of developing a user-generated chat and interactive gaming platform where users could create their own games. In 2001 he quit his job in order to develop his own virtual world on his own time. He was inspired by similar virtual worlds like "Neopets" and "There", but decided to create a 3D game so that players could interact in real-time. Roblox officially launched on March 28, 2006, with 15 million US dollars of investment from various venture capital firms. Within months after its launch, the game had a million registered players and 500,000 monthly visitors to the website. In 2006 Baszucki raised another round of venture capital funding totaling $6 million. By 2007 the game had 2 million monthly active users. In August 2009, Roblox was featured at the first-ever MineCon convention in Las Vegas, Nevada. An estimated 6,000 people attended the convention.
