I'm just telling my story. For those of you who were fortunate to grow up in a church that welcomed and cared, know that for the rest of us it was different. This song is about my deconversion from a fundamentalist Christian into an atheist. I didn’t want to write a song about my atheism because religion is something private, but this administration cooking up Bush Evangelism 2.0 and starting Holy Wars 2.0 forced my hand. (Real internet veterans will remember what "Jesusland" and the "United States of Canada" are.) I apologize if it sounds like I'm using Teto as a platform to spread my stance on religion. Like I've said, I want to sing this song, but I'm bad at singing, so I use Kasane Teto for the time being. (more info in comments) Lyrics: [Verse 1] My mom took me to Sunday school when I was five. She set me on this long road of guilt for life. At fourteen, I wanted to castrate myself. The bible said: Better lose part of me than end up in hell. At sixteen, I cried as I prayed for my friend. He's gay. He'd go to hell if he didn't bend. As I learned more, doubts built inside my head. So the pastor tossed out the textbooks I've read. [Pre-chorus 1] The church said God loves all, but all it preached was wrath. How this war in the Middle East was his warpath. How our abortions gave us these hurricanes. How he created AIDS to straighten out the gays. [Chorus 1] I believed I was born undeserving of love. I had to bend to His will to not anger Him above. I was force-fed terrifying pictures of hell before I could even begin to think for myself. I thought I had to submit because Eve sinned first, Because Paul told me not to teach or speak in church. I was scared He'd torture me forever in hell. If I didn't follow His rules, stayed true to myself. [Verse 2] At college, I didn't go to church. Guess I went astray. I really didn't wanna wake up on Sunday. I still believed that God would never stop judging me. He saved a pit in hell where I'd burn eternally. But things didn't make sense the more I thought and observed. Evolution, the giraffe's laryngeal nerve. What makes my faith correct the other's faith unsound? Why is the right one always the one that was passed down? [Pre-chorus 2] The church said they're the way, but all they preached was lies. How we have to submit to men and be good wives. How we can't be pretty. We must dress modestly. How Eve's sin means a man must rule over me. [Chorus 2] I believed I was born undeserving of love. I had to bend to His will to not anger Him above. I was force-fed terrifying pictures of hell, before I could even begin to think for myself. I thought I had to submit because Eve sinned first, Because Paul told me not to teach or speak in church. I was scared He'd torture me forever in hell. If I didn't follow His rules, stayed true to myself. [Post-chorus] I thought nothing could divorce me from my faith. I thought I'd stay a fundamentalist to my grave. But it's easier than I thought to commit apostasy. Cause losing faith's not a fight. It's a discovery. [Bridge] Sometimes I'm scared: what if I'm wrong? I'll go to hell. Sometimes I'm still not brave enough to trust myself. Sometimes I go to church. I miss the community. Sometimes I'm still scared that mom would disown me. But if he wants us to shut up and never speak, damn lesbians and gays for the way they breathe, If He sees us being ourselves as a sin, Then He's not a God worth believing in. [Chorus 3] I believed I was born undeserving of love. 0:00 Content Warning 0:12 Verse 1 0:39 Pre-chorus 1 0:52 Chorus 1 1:19 Verse 2 1:46 Pre-chorus 2 2:00 Chorus 2 2:27 Post-Chorus 2 2:54 Bridge 3:21 Chorus 3 3:48 Post-Chorus 3
