As the olympics draw to a close, Nana offers a prayer to the moon. May the future be free of suffering and allow all people to experience happiness. We are so sorry we can't credit you because we don't know who you are, but if anyone does know who they are, then please let us know so we can credit them... ......Seems like we never know who creates any of the wonderful pictures of Nana we find. "Tsuki no Inori" Moonsong II: So me and Nana are sitting here watching the Olympic closing ceremony and we thought now might be a nice time to share our next song. It's been a really interesting couple of weeks. Nana wishes there was a Vocaloid Olympics... but she's not sure what event she'd be good at... maybe she wouldn't be allowed to enter... What there should be is an international vocaloid event of some description! Like a conference, with seminars, master classes, performances, competitions and such like. Maybe there is already and me and Nana are just being in our little bubble as usual... We should try and explain this song and stop dreaming about vocaloid Olympics... This is our moon prayer. Yes... we are a little obsessed with the moon. It's our longest song yet, at over nine minutes. It's not really a traditional song in that sense, more of continuous chant, that is varied slightly in the later sections. It's basically split into three parts, early Morning, day and night. It's effectively a whole day starting at midnight. It follows on from a song that we haven't finished yet (sorry!). This song is basically a prayer, Nana hopes that by singing to the moon she can heal the world just a little bit. The first section is an Introduction, kind of like musical tears (Tsuki no uta) The middle section is the prayer itself and then a reminder that there are always reasons to be happy (Tsuki no inori/Kachou Fuugestsu.). The final section is Nana saying it's all going to be OK. (Sekai, iyasu) This time Nana and I tried to do jazz. We adore jazz, so we only hope we did a tiny bit of justice. We understand that we might not really have done it so well, but Nana really enjoyed singing in this style! We were watching a clip of Serge Gainsbourg playing the Jerome Kern jazz standard "All the things you are" when I wrote the swing part. Not that we could ever get to such a level, but our love of the piano means that we just had to try some jazz once! ----- The moon shines so bright, yet the night always is so dark. There is something so... nostalgic about this. As if the moon is remembering the sun in some way, looking on the day happily, but with sadness in it's absence. As oppose to the sun that just shines intensely. We see the moon as shining with a very different kind of passion. Complex and subtle, it is a bright light, but it can be seen to be quite melancholy. This kind of complex emotion is something that happens in music as well. In music, you can't always just play really loud to convey emotion. If you can convey sadness whilst playing a happy melody, then you have achieved almost a different type of passion. It's a haunting effect, and we believe that it can be said that much of music is about these unspoken subtleties. What's do we mean by Moon Song? A moon song is usually a melody that Nana sings to me at night. The moon seems so clear juxtaposed with the night, as if without the night, it has but nothing. It is only against the backdrop of the night that it can shine. Our music and our melody is similar, for without being lost, we can never be found, and if it wasn't for being lost Nana could never show me a way. One such proverb that features the moon is Kacho Fuugetsu. As we understand it, it refers to the natural beauty inherent in nature, that you should appreciate how amazingly wonderful everything in the world is to behold. Beauty of nature, the nearest thing in English we can think of is the idea of not taking things for granted, and the idea that the best things in life are free. The concept that true beauty is all around us, and need not always be contrived.
